It doesn't take much to guess that the name of this country, one of the newest sovereign states established in the 21st century, comes from the derivation 'Black Mountain'. Montenegro has a complicated history, only known in any detail from the 9th century, when the country was divided between three tribes.
Before Montenegro, a country half the size of Massachusetts and 60% of Wales, even became an area to consider Montenegro holiday deals, Montenegro broke away from the Byzantine Empire in the 11th century and passed through various periods of subjugation, primarily under the Ottoman Empire, until it was subsumed into Yugoslavia at the end of the First World War. When Yugoslavia broke up in 1992, Montenegro was, for a period, tied with Serbia, until a 2006 referendum voted in favour of independence. The Republic of Montenegro was declared the following year.
