Northern Lights Norway Short Break

- Northern Lights Chase in the Troms region

from £995 pp - 4 days / 3 nights

Overview:

Take a memorable short break to Tromsø, the centre of study for the Northern Lights. Tromsø is the gateway to the Arctic. The starting point of many historic North Pole expeditions. It is home to one of Norway's major universities and a centre of culture and development, nestled between blue fjords and snow covered mountains. You will be participating in our small group Northern Lights Chase (maximum 16 persons) during you stay in Tromso.

The dark winter months are a perfect time to visit and view the spectacular Northern Lights dancing across the polar sky.

Our experience has been that the Northern Lights are visible between the end of September and the end of April. If you wish to combine the winter activities with the Northern Lights, we suggest travelling from mid-December until the end of March.

Holiday price is from £995 per person based on the best flight availability and two people sharing a standard twin or double room.

*** Supplement for Christmas, New Year and half-term departures - please contact our team for a quote ***

2023 - 24 Departure Dates:

Departure dates
15 Sep - 31 Mar

Direct flights to Tromso are operated from:

  • London Gatwick - Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays
  • London Luton - Tuesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival in Tromso

Arrival in Tromso. Transfer to your hotel. Accommodation in a centrally located 3-star hotel such as Thon Hotel Polar, Quality Hotel Saga, Scandic Hotel Grand or similar. Upgrade to 4-star hotels - Clarion Hotel The Edge, Clarion Collection Hotel With, Scandic Ishavshotell, Radisson BLU Tromso or similar available upon request. Evening free to explore the city and look out for the Northern Lights.

Day 2: Enjoy Tromso & the Northern Lights Chase

Enjoy a Scandinavian breakfast at the hotel. The day is free to discover the Arctic Tromso known as ‘Paris of the North’. Tromso is the largest city in the Nordic countries north of the Arctic Circle and is home to the world’s northernmost university, brewery and cathedral. We recommend a visit to the Arctic Cathedral, that with its large, angular form and light color can easily be associated with an iceberg. We would also suggest a visit to Polaria - adventure centre with themes from the polar regions. Watch the panorama film from Spitsbergen, the arctic walk and the aquarium with arctic wildlife and live seals.

19:15 - late
During the Northern Lights Chase our very experienced guides will bring you to the best places for spotting the Northern Lights according to the last weather forecast. You will be driven in a mini-bus to places where the chances for seeing Aurora borealis are the highest. Your guides are on one specific mission: to take you wherever the chances to admire the magnificent Aurora are the best at that precise moment. Our guides do not only have a good sense for finding the Northern Lights, but they are also very experienced in taking photos of the most beautiful Lady of the North. It is fully guided tour on a minibus with a professional driver and an authorised guide on board. It includes hot chocolate and cookies.

We pick you up in Tromsø and take you by mini bus on a chase for the magical Northern lights, the epic part of your Arctic holiday. With good local knowledge we will find the best area for the lights and good scenery for your pictures. To find a clear sky we will drive where we have to, even to inner Troms if needed. During the evening your guide will tell you interesting information about the Northern lights, both the science and the folklore. We will also show you how to adjust your camera settings for pictures of the northern lights, and we will take pictures of you with the lights for you to take home to show your family and friends. (Available for download in original size from our Flickr account). For some extra fun in the snow we also bring our “butt boards”, just in case we find some nice hills to sleigh down! We may also visit our lavvu (our modern Sami shelter) and sit around the nice warm bonfire and roast marshmallows (If we are within reasonable driving distance from our base camp).
* Occasionally the chance of a clear sky is low, and in that case we will advise you to reschedule for the following day without additional cost.

Day 3: Time for winter activities or Northern Lights Tours

Breakfast at the hotel. Day to explore Tromso or join some of the activities that Tromso has to offer:

  • Dogsledding
  • Reindeer Safari
  • Snowmobile Safari
  • Snowshoeing
  • Ice Fishing
  • Whale Safari
  • Northern Lights Tours
  • Overnight in a Lavvu tent

Day 4: Farewell Tromso

Breakfast at the hotel. If time permits, you can go shopping in the Paris of the North (so named due to the ships coming with all the fashions of Paris in stock on their way to Russia) before departure. Hunt down some beautiful reindeer fells, some high fashion or some traditional souvenirs, or simply sip lattes in a street café and watch the local fashionistas go by. Transfer to the airport. Return flight.

Package Includes:

  • Flights from London to Tromso, direct flights from London Gatwick are operated on Mondays and Fridays, and from London Luton on Wednesdays and Sundays (we can arrange flights from other UK airports upon request)

Hi Inga

Had a wonderful time.

Hotel excellent. Aurora cruise was also excellent and suited our needs perfectly.

In addition the aurora made a stunning appearance.

My wife and daughter went on the cable car which they loved, unfortunately I missed this due

to being ill with a chest infection which I probably caught on the plane journey. Therefore, looks like we are going to repeat this next year (March 20)

since being ill  I personally felt a little cheated – just one of those “things”.

Thanks for everything.

Good Afternoon Inga,

Thank you for getting in touch.  We had the most wonderful time in Tromsø and although the weather seemed to be against us, we did manage to see the Nothern Lights, which was the highlight for me.

Tromsø was a lovely centre as was the hotel, it couldn't have been more convenient for everything and the people we met were all wonderful and so willing to tell you about their history and town, it was a magical experience.

Thank you to you and your team for making it all possible.

Hi Diana

Many thanks for your help.  We loved Tromso and YES we did see the Northern Lights!  We loved the husky sledding and whale watching too.

Also the hotel was great - good location and the best breakfast we’ve ever had in a hotel!

All in all a great success and my husband wants to return sometime!

Many thanks for your organisation and help.

Yours,

Lucy M

Hello Inga,

I just wanted to say “thank you” for a wonderful short break in Tromso. It was perfect on every way and was very well organised. In fact the schedule ran like clockwork!

The hotel, Clarion Collection With is extremely comfortable and very good value and the trips were superb.

All in all, the holiday exceeded our expectations.

This is the second time we have used Baltic Travel and we look forward to using your services again.

Thank you!

Happy Christmas!

Hi Julija,

Thank you for the welcome back email and happy new year to you too. I hope you got some time off!

We absolutely loved our trip to Norway, thank you so much for arranging it all.  The hotel was lovely, the staff wonderful (and really accommodating with the veggie options – thank you for passing this on), we absolutely loved all of the excursions and even got to see the northern lights, which was really magical.  The hotel also left us a little card, chocolates and prosecco to wish us happy anniversary.  A really lovely touch (thank you also for thinking to mention this to the hotel J).

The only negative I can give you is that our outbound flight was delayed and our transfer wasn't there for us when we arrived in Tromso, but we called your office and they were able to fix the problem in 15 mins and kindly arranged for the hotel to prepare a snack for us as we missed dinner.  So it really wasn’t a problem at all.

Thanks again for arranging an unforgettable break for us.

All the best,

Lindy

Dear Julija

Happy New Year ! We had a truly fabulous time in Tromso and were so happy that we booked everything through Baltic Travel - the hotel was the perfect base and even though there was a problem with one of the rooms on the first night, the staff rectified it and sent Prosecco and treats to the new room. All of the organised trips turned out to be fabulous - so great!

I have to say that our break in Tromso was such a memorable one and this was in part to do with your fantastic communication, helpfulness and all round knowledge- thank you!

Kind regards

Lisa

Dear Julija,

Happy New Year!  We feel very blessed in this trip and very grateful for your help in all the arrangement.  I believe we’ve caught the best scenes of nature we’ve ever experienced.... full moonlight in 24 hours darkness at Artic on the cruise, Snow White Tromso, and of course the amazing and stunning norther lights all over the clear sky dancing around us!

Thanks so very much, Julija!  We’re getting requests from families and friends already about our itinerary.  We are sharing out you and your company contacts.

Hope you also like the photos we’ve taken....just a few shots here.  Wishing you a very happy and healthy year 2019!

Cheers!

Dear Michael,

Thank you for getting in touch.

Yes, I had a fantastic time in Tromsø! It's a truly beautiful city and I'm delighted to report that I managed to see the Northern lights 3 times in total (very lucky considering the foggy weather). It was a truly wonderful experience. I'm also pleased to say that, apart from a minor flight delay, everything went smoothly and I really must thank you for organising everything for me - it made my holiday completely stress-free.

I really hope to return to Norway at some point, perhaps during the summer months as I'd really love to experience the midnight sun!

Thank you so much again for organising this trip for me. I will certainly keep Baltic Travel Company in mind when I (hopefully) return to Norway!

Kind regards

Celeste

Hi Michael

We had the best time! I would even go so far as to say it’s the best holiday we’ve ever had.

Tromsø was amazing, such a beautiful place, especially when knee deep in snow. The locals were so friendly. The northern lights chase was fantastic. Our host Trine was great and made everyone feel at ease. Even if we hadn’t seen the Northern lights she would have made it a special trip...teaching us about the lights and Norway and it’s history. It was really interesting. She was also great with our sons which was nice especially as they were the only children on the trip. And we did see the northern lights which was the whole reason for the trip so we were beyond happy!

The dog sledding trip was great but soooo cold (-25). The staff were great & it was an unbelievable experience. The scenery was breathtaking.

Stockholm was also beautiful and dusted with wet snow. Perfect for snowballs, so my boys were very happy. The hotel here was lovely. Both hotel breakfasts were the best we’ve experienced, so much choice and interesting new foods to try.
We were also very impressed with you & your company. The itinerary & advice you provided were very helpful indeed.
So in summary we had a fantastic once in a lifetime holiday, the only problem is we want to go back soon! Maybe I should buy a lottery ticket?!
Thanks so much for all of your help.
Rebecca & family

Dear Julija.

I'm really sorry for my late reply. Can't believe that it's 2 weeks already gone since we came back from Norway.
I can't thank you enough for your help. You are an absolute diamond. You made our trip the best holiday so far. I left a nice feedback on your Facebook page as well.

I'm looking into our next trip with you guys because our experience with your company was amazing. Thank you again.

Norway is beautiful and definitely a big part of my heart. Such a lovely people, gorgeous places and a very relaxing atmosphere. The hotel was fabulous too. It's a shame that we couldn't stay longer.
I'll attach a few pictures for you.

Will keep in touch because I would like you to arrange our next adventure. ??
Many thanks
Kind regards
Barbara
PS. On the Northern light chase we met some other couples who travelled through your company and they were really impressed too.

Hi Michael

thank you for your e mail. We had a fabulous time thank you. Both the trips were great and we saw the lights which made our trip ??.

There were 2 very minor issues which didnt affect our enjoyment at all but just for you to know.

The hotel room was only set up for 2 people but they rectified that promptly and the taxi company didnt arrive at 11.30 for the return journey and when we called them they said it was booked for 12 .

Thank you for all your help with the booking which made for a hassle free couple of days.

Hi Daina

We returned from our trip to Tromso on Friday and we felt we had to e-mail to say thank you for a well organised trip on your part.

Our boat trip out was great fun. We saw the lights but wish we had a better camera. The cod meal on board was fabulous.

The chase was also good but again we wish we had a better camera.

Finally, the snowmobiling day out was one of the best days we have ever had. We are both well into our 60’s but we felt like a couple of teens out in the snowbound countryside.

Thank you again Alan and Sue.

Good afternoon Inga,

Thank you for your email. We had an amazing fun time, but regrettably the Northern Lights did not shine for us!!

The hotel was basic but clean and breakfasts were not particularly hot when choosing the hot option from the buffet.  The location was very central and within minutes walking distance of plenty of attractions.

The excursions were brilliant and we were very impressed by the company that took us on the Northern Lights chase.  After having it cancelled on our first chosen date due to the weather conditions not being suitable, the alternative night was better weather.  The driver tried his best to take us to  a location suitable to see the lights and never seemed to give up! Ten out of ten for everything from the comfy minibus to the hot drinks, chocolate cake and toasted marshmallows!!

The night time dog sledding adventure was brilliant, and again, the company that it was booked with could not be faulted. Great value for money!

The airport transfers were excellent and the flights with Norweigan were very good.  (I don't think I have ever been on a plane that took off exactly on time as it did on our outward bound flight)!

We would recommend you, your company, and all the companies involved in our holiday to anyone wishing to go to Tromso.  The scenery was breathtaking.  We intend to try again to see the lights possibly next year but maybe at a different time of year - October/November and try our luck then!

Thank you for all your hard work putting together an amazing and memorable trip for us all.

Yes, the whole Tromso experience was great.  Thanks for the tip about the cable car.  The Polar museum was wonderful, I

hope they don’t modernise the building.  The Northern Lights guide was very good indeed, and set up my camera and

loaned me a tripod.  I got some amazing photos as it was a lovely clear night.  The husky trip ws great, too.

Well done and many thanks

Hi Daina!

Happy New Year!
I've been meaning to email you to let you know how the trip went!

It was amazing! We were so, so lucky with everything. We saw The Lights on the first night we arrived from the City; but then went on the excursion the second night, and they completely blew us away - as we were away from the light pollution in the City. So amazing!
The dog sledding was brilliant, my husband says that was his favourite bit! I managed to flip us off the sled, so he took over for most of the trip out and back to the base!
And we saw the whales! Both types - Humpbacks and Orcas! Again, such an amazing experience to see them.
Just as feedback, I don't think there is anything which we would have wanted to do differently. The trip was planned perfectly. The hotel waslovely, nice and central to everything and about a minutes walk to the pick up site for the excursions!
Thank you so much for all your help with everything!
Many Thanks
Kimberley

Hi Lena

I just wanted to drop you a very quick message. We both just loved the holiday - the husky sleds, reindeer, Northern Lights - everything we could have wished for and Tromso is just beautiful, although we did have a walk around on our "day off" and went up the cable car we ran out of time so, unfortunately, did not get to the museum etc - next time. We could have done with another day, really, but you have to leave something for next time.

Please let the skipper and his wife from our dinner cruise know that that was the best cod ever - caught that morning, apparently, it was just to die for.

Thank you for organising such an amazing trip - Brian really missed something.

I hope you had a good holiday/Christmas and all the best for the New Year.

Hi Lena

and welcome home to you too - Australia must have been wonderful. I did call when we returned from Tromso but you were away and I totally forgot to email you, so I'm glad you prompted me!

It all went well, it was such a treat being met at the airport, the meals were good and the waffles were a great bonus! Our room was very small, but we weren't in it much. There wasn't any room to put our clothes so we left them on the chairs - The strange thing was that there was a picture fixed to the ceiling above the bed! But the staff are all cheerful, friendly and helpful.

The weather wasn't good unfortunately. It was cold and wet, but we made the most of it and saw quite a bit of Tromso. We did see a teensy bit of the northern lights! we had to go to Finland where it was actually dry, cold and plenty of snow. I didn't realise that the lights can be really wispy like steam and as soon as you tun around to see them they have gone! But we did see them. The tour guide, Carl I think, was very good and kept our spirits up on the long evening. We left at 19:15 and got back to the hotel at almost 02:00 hrs!

We were unlucky with the weather but had a good weekend. And the taxi arrived to take us back to the airport as expected so all was well.

I'm sure you had a terrific holiday!

best wishes

Liz

Hi Saija,

Oh it was amazing! I didn't want to leave at all!

We were also fortunate enough to see the lights too.

I was really happy with the choice to book with you and arrange everything with you, and all your partners.

What I liked the most was that in the first day we were to chase the northern lights, those people informed us that we probably wouldn't be seeing any lights and offered us a refund.

I really liked that honesty and option, although it wasn't their fault. But we took the ride anyway.

On the contrary, the company that we did the northern lights Safari to one of the four camp bases, wasn't nowhere near that.

Not that it was a bad experience, not at all, but i didn't like that they were telling us "lies" about the sky clouds. We could see it ourselves that it was 100% clouds.

It was like she knew that we wouldn't be seeing lights anyway and instead she didn't say anything - not to mention it was nowhere near a Safari. It was more like a base stay.

But the camp base was amazing, people were very kind food was great!

I liked the snowmobile Safari, that was so cool at the Camp Tamok, the guides were so kind and friendly, as well as the soup!

Villmarkssenter, was amazing too. This is were we saw the lights in all their glory. So great experience! And then the next day with Andrei from enjoythearctic.no, that was so cool! I really like that fella, and the fact that he had a drone and the fjords he took is at. Really nice lad.

Lastly the hotel was spot on, with its breakfast and everything. The only thing i can say is that sheets weren't changed during our stay but, we didn't stay a lot in the room after all. In general 4.5/5.

And in regards with you, I'm happy to book a package again with you in the near future. Overall the experience was 4.8/5 which was really good! The Tromso trip was great! :)

Hi Inga,

We had a great time thank you!

I’ve added a few photos to a facebook albumn, hopefully you can see them here – please let me know if not:

https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155565229204816.1073741840.803034815&type=1&l=6884f3e879

In time I will try to touch up the ‘lights’ photos and see if I can enhance the colours !!

The hotel was brilliant – It appears to have been newly refurbished, and the staff were v friendly and helpful – I could not recommend is more to anyone looking for a nice base for their stay.  The harbour view helped!

In the end we were able to do the dog sledding on the Sunday so that was good – a couple of photos in the album.  The lights chase on Saturday evening was fun, and as you can see we were able to find a spot where there was less cloud.  Camp Tamok was a fraction disappointing – in the dark we could still see that it was a great venue, but we were there to see the lights and it snowed all evening ?  unfortunately when we go tack to Tromso there were clear skies so maybe we would have seen the lights there.

Our comments to would-be future travellers is to book a northern lights excursion that allows you flexibility in location!  We did not do the whale watching but feedback from others was that there was lots of activity and it was a good trip.

I picked up a brochure at the airport re: Svalbard – maybe we will go polar bear ‘hunting’ the next time!  Looks very remote and very interesting!  Igloos and the Northern Lights are also on the bucket list!

Thank you again for all of your help, will be sure to mention Baltic Travel to all of our friends moving forward.

Kind regards,

Stephen

“The most amazing weekend of my life. ”

I booked the weekend 4 my partners 50th birthday. Booked through Baltic Travel Company. Saija was our consultant. She is 1 amazing lady who goes above and beyond.

We stayed at the Radison Blu hotel in Tromso. The 1st night we were given a business class rm. think this was to do with it being a special occasion. Beautiful rm.

I have lots of food allergies and we did find it difficult to get the most basic gluten free food. We found a lovely bar on the harbour that being GF wasn't a problem. We also had breakfast at the hotel again they catered 4 me and we had 2 lovely meals in their restaurant. I highly recommend anyone t eat there.

In Tromso there is believe it or not, a Spar shop that has a really good selection of Gf food.

We stayed in a wooden Lavvu on Saturday night. Recommended by Saija. WOW is all I can say. What an experience. The lovely couple Trina and her husband who own the land where the Lavvu is, cooked us a wonderful reindeer stew. A breakfast was provided 4 us t do ourselves 4 the following morning. We were also blessed as we saw the Northern Lights!! Not something I will ever forget.

Sadly on Sunday evening our husky sledding was cancelled due to an avalanche and there was still heavy snow. Our trip was refunded lby the following day.

Sunday evening we managed to book a Husky Safari through the raddison for the following morning. I would advise anyone to do this as it's in daylight and the views are awesome. We got to drive our own team of huskys. It's a "must do"

Monday evening our flights got delayed due to the fog in England. Again Saija to the rescue!! Organised new transfers and nothing was a problem.

To sum up my weekend..... AMAZING!!

Go to Tromso but book through Baltic travel. U will feel like the only person they are dealing with.

Thank you Saija from the bottom of our hearts.

Best regards,

Mandie Bennett

Hi Saija,

Thanks for the email.

You'll be glad to hear that we had a wonderful trip and many thanks for the last minute changes which allowed us to make the most of our time in Norway after the terrible start.

It would be hard to pick out any individual highlight as we enjoyed every activity however the northern lights and whale watching tours that you organised for us were absolutely first rate.

We also went cross country skiing and dog sledding which was fantastic fun. Our favourite restaurant was the Bardus bistro, exceptional food and service. Another fabulous restaurant was Ra Sushi (the restaurant rather than the take away in the shopping centre).

One 'off the beaten track' experience that I would highly recommend is a visit to the spa boat 'Vulkana'

It is an amazing converted fishing trawler with sauna, jacuzzi and steam room run by an incredibly friendly and helpful lady and an unforgettable experience, I even managed to go for a swim in the sea whilst there!

Anyhow, thanks once again for all of your assistance, I would not hesitate in recommending your company to anyone planning a trip to the area

Kind regards

Mark

Hi Daina

My sincere aplogies for the delayed reply.

Our Northern Lights short break to Tromso, Norway in March 2016 was just awesome, marvellous and out of this world. All the experiences will go down our memory lane for the rest of our lives. We were very lucky to see the full panaromic views of the Northern Lights at two different places. Our guide Denise was just exceptional and so was the bus driver Gert. We still keep on thinking about it and looking at the photos taken.

We also experienced Dog Sledding and wow what a whale of a time my wife and I had. Everyone was so helpful, polite, courteous and went out of their way to ensure we had great time and holiday.

We would also like to thank Daina Kontrima from the kernel of our hearts for planning and organising such a breath taking holiday. She has always been polite, helpful, understanding and very efficient. We are pleased to have booked this and previous holiday with her. For both of our Norway holidays we did not face any problems and all was planned perfectly.

Daina, the above message is from both of us. Also I am attaching a few of our Northern Lights experience photos which we hope you will like.

Also could you please let us know if you cover Austria for our next holidays and would you recommend it to be visited and any other places.

Once again many thanks to you for arranging all this for us so nicely.
Avinash and Usha T

Just wanted to report in on our holiday. It was really lovely. Everything went without a hitch and we got to see the Northern Lights. Many thanks for all your help and organisation for this trip it was much appreciated and I will be sure to recommend Baltic Travel company to friends and family. I think the Northern Lights chase group were the highlight. I loved that it was a small group tour and the guy we had was friendly and helpful and personable which just made it a lovely and unique experience. Also having someone show me how to take a photo of the northen lights was great. It really made it fun to enjoy. The Reindeer Sledding was also fun and enjoyable. The Sami guides were really friendly and we got to see the puppies and dogs from dog sledding. They were so adorable.

Kind regards
Elyse

Dear Lena,

Just a short note to say how very much we enjoyed our trip to Norway.

The hotel was great - they upgraded us to a room with a wonderful view of the port and the breakfasts were fantastic!

Saturday was drizzly and we never thought we’d have a chance of seeing the Northern Lights so we went to see the film at the planetarium just in case! As if by magic, by the time we got on the bus, the skies were clearing and after a drive nearly to Sweden we were rewarded. lt has long been an ambition of mine to see the Aurora and we saw a spectacular display. The stars too were stunning in the black sky. The guides were really knowledgeable and enthusiastic and the photos they emailed me are a wonderful reminder. lt was an unforgettable experience!

Sunday brought cloudless blue skies - perfect for snowmobiling! Camp Tamok was lovely and the drive up in the mountains was fantastic fun with stunning views. Great lunch in the hut too!

The Norwegian people were so friendly and the country looked absolutely stunning from the air (we had sunshine both ways!). lt’s given us a taste for more - maybe a visit in the summertime.

Thank you so much for all your help and advice in organising our trip.

Best wishes,

Jenny

Hi Iveta

Thanks for sorting everything out for us. We had an excellent break in Tromso. Observed the northern lights on 1 of the 3 nights (unfortunately other 2 nights were cloudy). Hurtigruten cruise was also excellent (stunning scenery). We may return to Tromso early next year. Alternatively we are considering Iceland as a destination next Summer. If and when we decide I will contact you for a booking. Again, thanks for everything and bye for now.

Dear Iveta

Just wanted to thank you for such a lovely holiday.
We had a fantastic time in Norway, enjoyed every minute of it and we saw the lights both on the Saturday and Sunday evenings. We have a great time dog sledging and the boat trip was a fantastic place to see the lights from.

I loved Norway and would love to go back.

Many thanks indeed for all your help and advice - it made the booking really easy.

Dear Veronika,

Just a quick line to say thanks for all the work you put into our holiday.
It was fabulous. The vouchers all worked, in the hotel we got a room with a sea view, and it served afternoon waffles, and an evening meal all included in the price.
The reindeer sledding was ok - the Sami talk beforehand great. We both loved the Husky dog sledding and would recommend it to anyone.
We saw the lights with Kjetil, so our holiday was perfect.

Thanks
Penny

Dear Iveta,

We had a wonderful time in Tromso. We did catch a glimpse of the lights so are happy. The hotel and staff were brilliant, we could not fault them. The light evening meal saved us a fortune because as you know the cost of living is very high. Overall the trip was fantastic and we would certainly recommend the Clarion hotel and Baltic Travel. You have been brilliant too. Thank you very much.

At some point in the future, possibly Autumn time, we would like to visit the Baltic states Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. We would also like to visit Finland especially Helsinki. You and Baltic Travel will be the first we contact. If you have any good deals please let us know.

Very kind regards.

Hi Iveta

Thank you for your help/advice associated with our short break in Tromso early Feb 12.
We had a wonderful time and observed the Aurora Borealis on 2 of the 3 nights we were there.
The only downside was it was very cold in Tromso (coldest since 1965) and also expensive, however, we do intend to revisit around the same time next year and at the same hotel.

We will probably book sometime this Summer. Therefore, in the meantime grateful if there is information you could provide e.g. prices/brochures etc.

Best Regards
Dennis A.

Hi Veronika

Just a note to say thank you so much for making all the necessary arrangements for myself and Graham to visit Tromso.  We had a fantastic time and it really helped having everything sorted in advance. We did see the Northern Lights, not at their most spectacular but at least we saw them. Tromso was wonderful and I do hope we get the opportunity to visit again someday. Take care,

Best wishes

Dear Daina

Well- we made it! It was a great trip and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We'd like to thank you for all your work in making it such a memorable experience. Your professionalism was great but, more than that, your helpful and friendly approach made it so much easier for us to plan exactly what we wanted to do and the whole trip ran on oiled wheels. We particularly valued your patience in answering our interminable questions! Thank you, too, for rearranging our dog sled ride. A MAJOR bonus was that we saw the Northern Lights so thank you for helping to create a wonderful memory for us.

With best wishes,
Ann M.

Dear Daina - we had a wonderful time in Norway - very good flights and accomodation and best of all 5 hours of seeing the northern lights - we went out twice first night no clouds but no lights and the last night was the best the guide had ever seen (we drove to the border with Finland). Thank you!

Will I see the Northern Lights?

Please scroll down to see the specifics for the country you wish to visit:

Iceland:
The Northern Lights are in the Northern sky from September through April but are only visible when the sky is clear and free of clouds. Like many of natures wonders, it’s ephemeral – they may be visible, they may appear for a bit and then be gone. But it’s worth it to be patient. Because they’re a winter event, you need to be prepared to wait outside, while looking for them. It’s best to dress very warmly, in layers, with good footwear, gloves, hats and whatever else will make you comfortable while you await this truly amazing event. The Northern Lights can be pretty spectacular, and for the best photos we recommend using a tripod. Much of Iceland offers a very a good chance to see the Northern Lights when conditions are right. Remember – the Northern Lights are natural phenomena, not guaranteed, but appreciated all the more for their elusive qualities.

Norway:
Northern Norway is one of the world's best places to experience the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). In Northern Norway, Northern Lights occur in up to 90% of every clear night in the period from late September to late March. Most Northern Lights occur in the time span from 6pm to slightly after midnight, with an absolute peak at around 10-11pm.

In Norway, the area north of the Arctic Circle is prime aurora territory. The various destinations in the High North have a distinct personality, and are well worth exploring. Major places in Northern Norway are Tromsø, Kirkenes, Alta, Bodø, Lofoten and Vesterålen Islands and Svalbard.

Finland:
The best place to see the Northern Lights in Finland is in the Northern Lapland region, which is almost entirely located within the realm of the Arctic Circle. During the dark winter months here, when the sun rarely peaks its head over the horizon, you can expect to see the Finland Northern Lights with regularity, and other peak seasons include February through March and September through October. The most common colours of the Northern Lights are greenish-yellow and red.

The Finnish term for the Northern Lights, Revontulet, meaning fox fire, comes from an old tale where the fox was believed to swish its bushy tail on the snowy fell landscapes, throwing sparks into the air.

As mentioned, Lapland is the best place to see the Finland Aurora Borealis, with the Kilpisjarvi area offering the most abundant opportunities. The best time of the day to see the Finland Northern Lights is between 9 pm and 11:30 pm, though they are certainly not restricted to this time frame.

Sweden:
In Northern Sweden, the Northern Lights usually occur during the winter months through late March or early April, but they can be spotted as early as September in the Northernmost parts. Your best chance of catching a glimpse of the Northern Lights is on cold winter nights when the sky is clear and cloudless. You need to be away from city lights, which dilute the effects of these natural phenomena, so head out into the countryside. On clear nights, the Northern Lights can be visible from most locations in Swedish Lapland, occurring between 6 pm to and 2 am, with the strongest shows happening between 10 pm and 11 pm. For those willing to brave the cold on winter nights, here are some of the best locations in Swedish Lapland for viewing these phenomena:

Abisko National Park
Abisko National Park, a couple of kilometers north of Kiruna, is a prime location for viewing the Northen Lights. The scientifically proven “blue hole” — a patch of sky over the Torneträsk lake that usually remains clear despite overcast weather in surrounding areas — gives Abisko its own micro-climate, which is suitable for catching the lights.

Jukkasjärvi and the Torne Valley
Not only does the village of Jukkasjärvi (population roughly 541) boast the world’s first ice hotel (rebuilt ever year from Torne River ice), it’s also one of the best regions to view the Northern Lights. ICEHOTEL organizes guided tours for guests which takes the to the Esrange Space Center located 30 minutes from Kiruna. You can dine at a wilderness camp and get the chance to scan the Arctic winter sky for aurora borealis.

Other regions in Swedish Lapland
As mentioned earlier, if weather conditions are just right (clear, dark, cold, and cloudless), you might catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights from any location within subarctic and arctic Sweden — even close to larger towns such as Luleå, Jokkmokk, Arvidsjaur, and Gällivare.

Greenland:
The northern lights - or Aurora Borealis as it is officially known - actually occur all year round, but cannot be seen during the summer months in Greenland due to the midnight sun. The phenomenon is often seen around midnight and is best experienced on a dark, clear night in the period from September to the beginning of April. If you are travelling during this period, you can see the Northern Lights from anywhere in the country, whilst in South Greenland the northern lights can be seen from as early as the end of August.

Car Rental

You can rent a car, as long as you have a valid EU or international driver's license. Most cars will have manual transmission.

Transportation

Railway mostly serves domestic routes and is used as an easy and quick way to get from the capital to major cities of the country. There are some international routes, like to Moscow and St. Petersburg, but time spent on the way will be quite long.

Buses are one of the most convenient ways to travel between the Baltic States. Eurolines will get you between Riga, Vilnius and Tallinn. One way tickets will cost £ 15 - £ 20 and approximate travel time is 5 hours between the cities. Ticket reservations in advance are recommended.

Taxis are the quickest and most convenient way of travelling round the city. You'll find them located close to the main hotels. Usually it's quite easy to catch a taxi on the street, however, it's much better and safer to order one by phone. Taxi costs in all of the Baltic countries and Poland are approximately the same and a ride in the centre of the city will cost you approx £ 5 - £ 7.  Taxis in Finland and Russia are considerably more expensive.  It is always a good idea to get your hotel to book a taxi for you and ask approximately how much the trip will cost before you get in.

We would not recommend you to take public transportation within the city, as it's usually crowded and it may cause you unnecessary anxiety about where to stop.
